The typical cat diet of bygone eras, or those our parents or grandparents had, was very different from the diet of modern day cats. Yet they were more healthy. They didn’t have the multitude of diseases that are springing up every day, it seems. Logically, this means the diet is the key (or one of the major keys) to your cat’s health. Natural cat health includes a natural diet.
Table scraps or left overs were the common diets of bygone cats, supplemented by the odd mouse, or rat if the cat was particularly brave. This was in the days before fast food, so the diet of people was more healthy, too. This means the cat may have dined on stewed meat and carrots, for example.
Although this is not a perfect diet for a cat, it is a lot more perfect that the typical ‘quality’ commercial cat food. Why?
- Human grade food is better quality than the cheaper food used in animal food.
- Human meals were freshly made whereas commercial cat food can be made years ago.
- Human meals usually had a quantity of quality meat – commercial cat food predictably has a very low meat content as carbohydrates are cheaper.
- Human food was quality food, unadultered by the chemicals that are now used to flavour, colour, stimulate the appetite, make a more pleasing texture or appearance, to preserve, etc so common in commercial cat food.
If you currently consume a typical western diet of fast food, packet food, canned food, frozen food, you can’t provide the same quality of food for your cat with table scraps. But if you have a diet similar to those of bygone days, then table scraps may well provide superior nutrition to most commercial cat food.
The fact is that the benefits that commercial cat food claims is false. Turn the claims around 180 degrees, and you are closer to the truth. Commercial cat food is a corporate driven industry. Anyone who has experience of corporate business well know that profit comes before any other consideration. There isn’t even a conspiracy. People are simply doing their job. It’s up to you, as the guardian of your cat and her health, and the buyer of her food, to beware.
To provide a quality cat diet, one that will save you hundreds if not thousands in future veterinary bills, you need to feed your cat according to her evolutionary history. Natural cat health means feeding a healthy cat diet.
