Most people start to explore natural health choices for themselves either because they didn’t get the expected help or outcome from mainstream medicine, or they suffered bad side effects. Often both. Having made good personal progress, the next step, inevitably, is to look for better and more natural cat health choices. What was good for you is good for your cat!

The herbal approach to natural health care is undoubtedly effective in many instances, especially in regenerating organs. But can they be used safely on cats? The general answer is no. Let’s explore why not.

Cats are lone predators. They are built lightly to make them extremely agile with the ability to pounce silently and suddenly. The way this is attained is by lightening their skeletal frame and by making their organs less complex than those of the omnivore range (who tend to hunt in packs if they hunt at all) or herbivores.

This means that cats livers and other organs can’t break down the alkaloids commonly found in herbs. For example, echinacea, a wonderfully effective herb in practically all other species, is harmful to cats. The active ingredient in echinacea is phenol. This is toxic to cats. It deplete antioxidants and leads to kidney and liver damage.

The digestion of plants is complex and more complicated than the digestion of raw meat, which has been ‘pre-digested’ as it were.

So it is best not to mix in any plant based food into your cat’s food, for the same reasons. Although most food plants are not toxic, they can still damage your cat’s organs over time. This means that all commercial cat food is harmful to cats, although for many other reasons than the high carbohydrate (and so cheap) content.

Even many veterinarians, holistic or otherwise, are unaware of this.

A much safer choice of natural cat health care is homeopathy. Homeopathic treatment always searches for the cause of the problem and works in a unique way of individualising the patient. The personal symptoms of the cat are used to determine the most appropriate remedy.

It is easy to administer homeopathic remedies to cats. Once they know what it is all about, they rarely struggle, as is so common when medicating them with veterinary medicines.

The best natural cat health care, or any health care, you can use is to feed your cat a quality, natural diet and to get professional homeopathic treatment. Once you understand the principles behind the treatment, you can start to use some of the common homeopathic remedies at home.
