Keeping your cats health strong can be challenging in today’s world, when you are confronted by so many advertisements and claims shrieking at you that their product is the best. How do you cut through the hype and choose the best one?
First, you need to know a little about the psychology of marketing. Psychology is used very aggressively in marketing high profit commodities. The commercial pet food industry is a multi million dollar market and corporations have whole departments devoted to finding out just what makes you buy something.
Guilt is one very cleverly used tactic. Authority is another. Of course, much goes into making the product packaging look as attractive as possible.
But these are not based on any reality. Let’s examine them. Guilt is easy to stir up in any responsible pet person, or parent for that matter. It doesn’t mean that the guilt has any foundation. Of course you want the best for your cat. It’s a dumb question. Take it for what it is. Turn the question around and ask yourself, why is someone trying to make me feel guilty?
The answer is, to make you buy their product. That’s it.
What about authority? If you have been reading my blog posts for any time, you’ll know that veterinary schools are all financed, in part, by the pet food industry. It’s in their interests to do so, because once they have the students ‘on side’, their products will be promoted for life. Very good marketing! But again, is it based on reality?
Veterinary schools, along with medical schools, give little or NO training in nutrition.
How can this be so, when everyone who is anyone, knows that good nutrition is at the heart of good health?
Maybe wealth, rather than health is at the heart of these qualifications.
And finally, everyone knows that we are more likely to buy something that comes in an attractive package, rather than the exact same product that is not attractively packaged. Even if we know this and the attractively packaged product costs more.
So when you are confused by the advertising hype surrounding cat food, consider what is the reality.
Cats health depends upon several things, but nutrition is the number one priority. If you feed your cat food that helps to make an individual or corporation wealthy, then your cats health is likely to suffer. If you feed your cat according to her evolutionary history, then you have a much higher probability of having a healthy cat.
Cats whole physiology remains totally dependent on this for their health, despite man’s manipulation of breeds. Cats evolved over millennia. This far outpasses anything humanity has done.
Feed your cat as nature intended. Naturally Healthy Cats.
