When you discover how to prevent struvite crystals in cats, you open a pandora’s box. You discover new ways to keep your cat healthy, not just by preventing or getting rid of struvite crystals.

Struvite crystals are the most common form of mineral crystals that form in a cats urinary tract. Around half of all urinary stones in cats are struvite crystals. how to prevent struvite crystals in cats

You may be alerted to this problem when you see your cat straining to urinate, urinating outside the litter box, urinating frequently, has an increased thirst and/or has cloudy or bloody urine. The latter can only be seen if they urinate on a solid surface or a pale coloured fabric.

If you take your cat to the vet, you will almost always be given antibiotics and a ‘speciality’ diet.

It is likely that neither will help the problem, because the cause was not addressed.

Struvite crystals in cats are formed when the urine pH is too high, ie too alkaline. Healthy cats have low pH urine, ie acidic.

So how do cats get urine that is too alkaline?

By eating a diet that is high in plant based food – kibble, commercial cat food.

This means the antibiotics you are given, along with the ‘speciality’ diet, which is inevitably high in plant based foods, will only exacerbate the problem, rather than help it.

Antibiotics kill off all bacteria, creating a digestion problem. The ‘speciality’ diet is likely to be high in plant based food, so is a sideways move.

So what sort of diet will prevent struvite crystals in cats? Or dogs, for that matter. Or any health issue, as the right diet is key to good health in anyone.

It’s the one they evolved on – raw meat and bones, found in perfect balance in the prey they consume. A meat diet makes the consumer acidic, which is exactly how cats should be.

Meat needs bones to digest well and to be assimilated. Without this vital addition to their diet, cats can suffer other health issues.

This means, a balanced diet is vital. A balanced, fresh raw meat and bones diet will do a great deal more than prevent or get rid of struvite crystals. It can prevent, or heal, any urinary tract problem, any renal problem. It can prevent, or heal, any disease, be it physical or emotional. It can increase your cat’s well-being and energy.

However, not all cats convert well to this diet and it can take dedication on your part. As well as support from someone who has been there, done that. When you are new to different ideas and concepts, you are easily swayed backwards, so having someone holding your hand can be very reassuring.

The advanced stages of any urinary tract problem in cats, or in anyone, may need extra care. Homeopathic treatment can provide that.

Your job is to feed your cat right. No one else can do that. A practitioner’s job is to pick up on those areas the right diet can’t completely heal. But be under no illusion – the right diet is ESSENTIAL to any health problem. In anyone.

My 3 year old male cat has struvite crystal issues causing urinary blockage, treatment is expensive and prescription foods are not very appealing to him, vet not very helpful with alternative treatments, I’m afraid we will lose him if we don’t find a better course of feeding/treatment for this condition. Do you have dietary recommendations for this condition?

The main cause of these crystals is inappropriate food. Commercial cat food contains terribly harmful ingredients. So the first thing I suggest is to change the diet to a quality raw. My ebook goes into how to do that and what to feed.
