It isn’t rocket science. Like so much in life, when you discover the three reasons why cats are fussy eaters, it becomes so obvious you wonder why you never figured it out yourself.
Perhaps the reason is that you tend to follow the advice of those who you consider know best for your cat’s health. Even when you doubt the advice, when your instincts are telling you that doesn’t make any sense.
So let’s go through a logical process. You don’t want to believe me without evidence.
Commercial Cat Food
First, check out the ingredients of the cat food you are currently feeding your cat. Or check it out online. Bear in mind that the list order is a reflection of the greatest quantity, although it won’t say what quantity. So the first ingredient could be 90% or 30%, and everything else is less than that.
You’ll find that many, if not most, especially the dry food, consists mainly of plant based food, often processed to produce just the protein (such as vegetable protein isolate).
Then you have a long list of (mostly incomprehensible) ingredients, which relate to the synthetic ‘supplements’ they have to add to address the shortfall in nutrition.
There is also a list of the synthetic colours, flavours and preservatives. The colours are for your benefit. The flavours are to try to tempt your cat to eat the food. No need to explain what the preservatives do, but they do allow the dry food to remain on the shelf for months, even years.
Somewhere in the mix, you might see some animal protein. But you’ll have no idea what the quality of the protein is. It might be feathers (a new development), chicken feet, euthanised pets from vet clinics (a horrifying thought, but one that has been discovered), diseased farm animals, road kill. And the list goes on.
The good quality animal protein goes to the more lucrative human food market. Not into pet food.
Anything that can be added to pet food is. Such as waste fat left over from the human market who shun fatty meals. Meat past their sell by date.
You might just be getting a glimmer of one of the reasons why cats are fussy eaters, as it’s unlikely you find the information so far very palatable.
What Wild Cats Eat
Cats are carnivores. Everyone knows that. Wild cats hunt their prey. So what does this tell us?
That cats natural diet is a combination of fresh, raw muscle meat, organ meat and bones.
It also tells us something else. That the food wild cats eat is very fresh. They only kill and eat their own food. They aren’t like dogs who can happily, and without harm, eat carrion.
So the comparison of commercial cat food versus a wild cats diet looks like this:
Commercial Cat Food – versus – Wild Cats Diet
a large part is plant based food – versus – meat, organs and bones
cooked – versus – raw
low quality protein – versus – best quality protein
normally high in fat – versus – perfect natural balance of fat
stale, even infected meat – versus – very fresh meat
rarely in natural balance – versus – perfect natural balance
synthetic supplements – versus – no supplements necessary
synthetic flavours to entice- versus – natural flavour – no enticing
synthetic preservatives – versus – fresh so no need to preserve
Cats Know What’s Good For Them
A good quality, balanced, raw diet ensures not just good, but great health of your cat. Infections don’t get a look in. Worm infestations cease. Flea plagues disappear. Your cats energy increases. They become like playful kittens once again. Their coats shine brightly, feel soft, smell wonderfully clean. Their eyes are bright and alert. They sleep soundly. Chronic and autoimmune diseases improve, some may even disappear.
Once you have converted your cat to a healthy, raw, balanced diet (something that is not always easy), you’ll find they don’t want to go back to the old diet. Your life becomes much easier:
- Instead of trying different flavours, different brands to entice your cat to eat, they gobble up the good food with gusto.
- Instead of leaving dirty dishes, they lick the plates clean.
- Instead of regular visits to the vet for various ailments, they now don’t get them.
The reasons why cats are fussy eaters is because you are feeding them the wrong food, food that makes them sick, food they have to eat or starve.
