There are many concerns about feeding cats raw food. Most of them are baseless and inaccurate. After all what do wild cats eat?
Many people are natural worriers! So it’s normal for them to be concerned about their cat’s health. In particular, since there is conflicting information on the internet, there may be more concerns about raw feeding cats food, than about feeding them commercial 'food'.
Although that doesn’t make much common sense (more like rare sense!), habits die hard.
One has to appreciate that veterinary schools receive big donations from big p-harmer and big pet food. And they want to influence. So the information that’s taught is not bias-free. That is the number one reason mainstream vets don’t advocate feeding cats raw food. They only have to try it for themselves to see the huge health improvements.
But that deals a big blow to their income. First from a lack of sales of the commercial brands. Second from all the animals that are now so healthy, they don’t need vets.
All meat contains bacteria. The carnivores of the world, in this case our cats, have adapted to deal with it. They have very strong stomach acid in the order of pH 1. This is very low, akin to car battery acid, Any bacteria is easily killed. It doesn't stand a chance.
Cats, unlike dogs, tend to eat only the prey they have just killed. They won't eat carrion or stale meat as dogs can and do. This means you have to be very cognisant of only feeding very fresh meat, well within its use-by date. Or frozen when very fresh.
THIS is the reason cats are known for being fussy eaters. They are for a very good reason - the food you're offering them is not up to their standards.
Don't be fooled into thinking there is no bacteria in commercial brands. The majority of pet food recalls is because of bacteria in COMMERCIAL brands.
A balanced diet is essential. That means getting advice if you're not sure. Check the link on the right to get the low down.
Making your own food from scratch, when you understand what's important, will give your cat a MUCH healthier and more balanced diet than any commercial brand.
There are some warnings about handling raw meat for pets. I find this weird as people who consume meat themselves handle it all the time.
And there are no warnings on that, apart from the normal hygiene issues of keeping the chopping boards different for different foods and washing your hands after handling it.
What's the difference?
Concerns about feeding cats raw food invariably includes supplements. Most supplements are made in laboratories from petro chemicals. By the wildest stretch of the imagination, they can’t be called nutrients. They're synthetic. But they’re cheap.
The expensive and real supplements come from food.
So you can feed your cat poor quality food and top up with questionable (and toxic) supplements to make you feel you’re doing the right thing. Or you can feed good quality food which is balanced, and skip the supplements.
Logically, it’s a no-brainer.
If ANY food comes with a supplement, it is admitting a lack of nutrition.
In addition a supplement will be in excess. Many commercial brands are recalled due to an excess of vitamin D. This is the synthetic version, which can be toxic in excess doses.
All commercial cat food contains supplements. The cheap ones, the questionable ones, the ones made in a lab from petro-chemicals.
This means that in addition to a poor quality, non-nutritious food, commercial brands contain toxic ingredients. It's a double whammy.
So ask yourself why this person is focusing on concerns about feeding cats raw food.
Do they have another agenda?
What do wild cats eat?
Since wild felines are so successful, their chosen diet must be perfect. All we have to do is to duplicate it.
