Healing constipation in cats naturally first needs to explore why they get constipated. It isn't normal for a healthy cat.  What is shows is an imbalance in the digestive tract.

Stool is the waste products of the digestive system and regularity is important to maintain good health. Some toxins are also expelled via the bowels.

The characteristics of a cat's stool involves the consistency, frequency, amount, odour and colour. And this depends on the diet of the cat.

Cats are obligate carnivores. They thrive on a raw meat and bones diet.

Meat has no fibre. So there will be little stool.

Raw meat is digested quickly in a carnivore's stomach. This results in an almost odour free stool.

Cats come from the arid areas of the world where rain is either seasonal or virtually absent. This means they have devised strategies to get their liquid needs from other sources.

One way is to use the blood of their prey. Why waste it? That's one reason why cats only eat very fresh meat, that they have just killed. Blood congeals as rigor mortis sets in.

The other way is to extract as much water from the digested food as is possible without making it difficult or painful to pass.

This means the stool will be dry and crumbly.

So a healthy cat's stool is:

• infrequent (every 2-3 days)
• easy to pass
• there is only a small amount
• it's dry and crumbly
• it's almost odour free
• it is dark in colour

This is NOT constipation, but is often considered to be so when transitioning to a healthy raw meat and bones diet.

A cat can appear healthy on a commercial cat food diet for years, but it's a ticking time bomb.

Cooked food always takes much longer to digest and is normally incomplete. This results in a highly odourous stool.

Commercial cat food contains a lot of plant food, as they're cheaper than meat. Cats do not have the ability to utilise plant food, being carnivores, so much of it just passes straight through, again allowing for a strong odour.

Plants also contain a lot of fibre, so the cats poo with be bulky and frequent, at least once a day.

This means a cat fed commercial cat food will have unhealthy stool - at least daily, have a strong unpleasant odour, is very bulky, very soft and usually light in colour.

So an examination is needed before considering healing constipation in cats.

Real constipation in cats occurs when there is either difficulty or pain in passing a motion. Not because it is infrequent as many assume.

They may cry out or keep trying. They may try outside the litter tray.

Sometimes the stool will be partially expelled, then recedes back in. Sometimes, it won't even get that far.

This normally means the peristaltic movement of the gut has slowed down or stopped. It can also mean a constriction at the anus or the rectum.

Either of these can be caused by a number of factors including:

• stress, fright
• toxins in the environment including veterinary drugs
• an injury affecting the muscles and nerves of those responsible for the peristaltic motion

The veterinary solution is usually something to soften the poo without looking deeper into the cause. That can be helpful to get things started, but may return.
