Preventing constipation in cats can be very simple. In essence, it all comes down to their diet.
But first, it's important to understand who cats are and how they are different.
No
Veterinary colleges have no, or very little, education on nutrition. This is reserved for the commercial pet food industry who financially support the colleges.
Since nutrition is at the heart of health, this is a curious phenomena, to say the least. No education? Leave it to those who have a vested interest? Mmmm…
This begs the question of whether you can trust the advice of vets on nutrition?
Raw meat and bones doesn't contain fibre. This means a cat on a healthy raw meat and bones diet will have dry, hard, crumbly and infrequent poop. But easily passed. Maybe every 2 - 3 days.
This is NOT constipation.
Cats on commercial cat food, which has a lot of fibre, will pass frequent, bulky, soft and very smelly poop.
This is very unhealthy for them.
True constipation in any type of cat means difficulty or painful passing of the stool. NOT the frequency.
This can occur it the cat doesn't get enough liquid in their diet. Adding some water can resolve this issue.
It can also occur when the cat is on a vet med or two. Drugs tend to inhibit the uptake of nutrition, causing all manner of problems.
Feeding a healthy raw meat and bones diet frequently frees up the need for any drugs. So you get a double benefit.
Preventing constipation in cats means listening to Nature. Cats have been around a great deal longer than humans have been messing around with their diets – mostly for profit. This means you can’t better Nature.
